The sun also sets: the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity sphere, 1945-1995
Article Abstract:
The 50th anniversary of the end of World War Two should remind people of the causes of the war in the Pacific, suggesting courses of action and events to watch carefully. Western disarmament, the 1930 Smoot Hawley tariff, disengagement from Asia by the US and the European powers, and Japan's mercantilist economic system which demanded expansion, were prime causes. While the region still depends on US military might for security, it must prepare for the possible waning of Western willingness to underwrite Eastern peace.

China complex: superpower rights, superpower responsibilities
Article Abstract:
China has established itself as a rising power but its actions send disturbing signals on how it plans to use that power as a member of the intl community. Beijing has sought recognition of its strength and sovereignty over such issues as internal labor policies, while claiming issues beyond its immediate interests, such as copyright infringement, are out of its control. It does not recognize intl criticism as a tacit acknowledgement of its stature. US vacillation complicates the issue and encourages adventurism.

Integrate and persuade, but gently
Article Abstract:
The Philippines and other countries in the Association of South East Asian Nations regard the relations between Taiwan and China as an internal affair. However, the international community has a legitimate interest in these relations when China exercises its military power in the Taiwan strait. China needs to be persuaded by other countries that its future security and growth depend not on the unilateral exercise of power but on integration with the international community.
