The third way
Article Abstract:
Japanese partnerships between private and public sectors have not always been successful. 'Third sector' companies have developed a particularly bad reputation. Many such companies have ended up with losses, and the term 'third sector' has become synonymous with mismanagement. Local government has been involved in third sector companies and they became important from the early 1980s. The home affairs ministry has set guidelines to improve the running of these companies, and the guidelines include advice on achieving value for money and cutting losses by asset sales or other means if things go wrong.

Pushing the euro, pulling the yen
Article Abstract:
The euro has seen a drop in its value since it was launched, while the Japanese yen has risen in value. US economic growth is strong and this has strengthened the dollar in relation to the euro. A cheaper euro can bring benefits for Europe. The Bank of Japan has sought to contol the rise in value of the yen, which could affect Japanese economic growth. The yen could drop in value due to low interest rates and the slow pace of corporate reform.
