Singapore steals the crown
Article Abstract:
Singapore is widely regarded by leading international executives as the best location from which to do business in Asia. Singapore offers a highly developed telecommunications infrastructure and relatively low costs, and is becoming preferred to Hong Kong, even though the latter is still the most developed finance centre in Asia. Singapore is continuing to develop new service industries, and is therefore likely to pose an increasing threat to Hong Kong.

Parading for work: Vietnam's farmers seek better fortunes in the cities
Article Abstract:
Declining farm incomes are forcing an increasing number of Vietnamese farmers to obtain supplemental work outside agriculture or to give up farming completely and migrate to the cities. Market-oriented reforms beginning in the late 1980s hurt farmers by reducing the price of rice. Moreover, the end of agricultural cooperatives left many farmers with plots too small to feed their families.
