The time-bombs of Tomsk
Article Abstract:
There is concern in Europe about risks from Russian nuclear power plants which are at risk from accidents, and there are also security hazards associated ith Russia's nuclear industry. Sites in Siberia are of especial concern, with Seversk seen as the most dangerous. Seversk has plants some four decades old, and has a serious nuclear waste problem. There is fear that groundwater could be contaminated, and that nuclear dust could pose problems. Some progress has been made, but there is a need to persuade the government to make more progress, and the US has to be reassured that any funds it provides will result in Russia ceding some control.

Absurdly green
Article Abstract:
Sweden plans to close two nuclear reactors in a move that could harm the environment as well as being expensive. The move will involve a high cost in demolishing the reactors, and could mean more electricity has to come from coal and gas. There could also be increased demand for electricity from nuclear plants in Russia and the Baltic, which sell electricity to Nordic countries. These plants to the east are far less safe than the Swedish plants, and Sweden would be better advised to improve the safety of these plants rather than shut down its own plants, which have a good safety record.
