The tragedy of East Timor
Article Abstract:
East Timor has around 800,000 inhabitants, while Indonesia has 200 million. Indonesia invaded East Tinor in 1975 and the invasion was followed by repression which led to the deaths of some 200,000 people. The Indonesian resident, B.J. Habibie, offered a referendum to East Timor in Jan 1999, and it was organized by the United Nations (UN). There should be pressure from Indonesia's neighbors in Asia to ensure that the referendum is respected, and western countries should also be involved. The reputation of the UN is important, and it cannot simply desert East Timor after organizing the vote.
