A rabbit pulled out of a hat
Article Abstract:
Kurdish leader, Abdullah Ocalan, has been sentenced to death in Turkey, and has called on his followers to cease their rebellion against Turkey. His capture and the decision of the Kurdistan Workers' Party to keep to Ocalan's promises may lead to better treatment for Kurds in Turkey. Kurds have gained little from a long period of struggle. There is pressure on the government to use this opportunity to end the conflict. The US is also seeking better treatment for Turkey's Kurds.

The reformers make their bid
Article Abstract:
Islamists are seen by some Turks as a threat to the secular state, and the Welfare party has been shut down after it was found to have tried to bring in religious rule. There were moves to ban the Islamist Virtue Party in early 1999. The party came third in elections in April 1999, and there is a debate on how it could have performed better. There are internal divisions within the party, with a move by reformers to gain control of the organization.
