The town of Chimoio has become a haven for refugees fleeing the war. It has been a scene of recent attacks by alleged Renamo members, thus contributing to the end of the ceasefire between them and Pres Joaquim Chissano. Talks continue in Rome, Italy to work out differences over political control.

Mozambique president Joaquim Chissano and Renamo rebel leader Afonso Dhlakama agreed to a cease-fire that may end the country's civil war. The cease-fire is tenuous, because of the many refugees and the deteriorating infrastructure and living conditions.

The civil war in Mozambique may soon come to an end. Mozambicans have observed what prolonged civil war has done to their neighbor Angola. A peace treaty was signed in October by President Joaquim Chissano and rebel leader Afonso Dhlakama.
