The ups and downs of a Korean politician
Article Abstract:
Lee Shin Bom survived many hardships and disappointments since he joined in South Korea's struggle for civilian, constitutional government as a student in the late 1960s. As an opponent of the country's various authoritarian regimes, between 1969 and Jul 1987 Lee was persecuted, jailed, tortured and forced into exile until he was pardoned following the triumph of democracy. After his return to South Korea in 1987 he worked for political leader Kim Young Sam until 1990 when Kim joined forces with the governing party. In May 1993 Lee became director of the Environmental Management Corp.

Article Abstract:
Chairman of North Korea's Committee for the Promotion of External Economic Cooperation Kim Jong U visited Hongkong in Sep, 1993 in hopes of convincing foreign investors to take advantage of his country's Rajin-Sonbong free economic and trade zone. The zone is part of the Tumen River development area, a UN development program involving North Korea, Russia and China. The gist of Kim's sales pitch was North Korea's willingness to allow a totally free market economy in the region and a five-year tax holiday before a maximum 14% corporate tax is imposed.
