Once and future leaders
Article Abstract:
Germany accepted the dominance of France following the 1939-1945 war, but this has changed as Germany has gained more power, especially since German reunification. Germany is better placed to lead Europe, and ties between Germany and France are loosening. France still has a more buoyant economy than that of Germany, but Germany's strength is likely to increase over the longer term. German influence is likely to become apparent in internal issues, and to benefit Europe as a whole.
