The Islamic fanatic group Taliban appeared to be in almost total control of Afghanistan, but their forces suffered significant losses north of the capital city of Kabul. It is thought that the opposition may consist partly of Russian and Tajikistan troops.

Woes of winter: Afghanistan
Article Abstract:
The oncoming winter is only increasing the suffering of Afghan people struggling to survive in an economy devastated by years of civil war. The war continues as well, as Mujaheddin leaders struggle between each other to take control of the country.

Mujahideen factions are warring over control of Kabul, which is resulting in the destruction of many parts of the city. Many civilians are fleeing the city, and their homes and possessions are often looted by roving soldiers.
