Researchers studying the blood-brain barrier have discovered that T-cells are able to penetrate endolethial cells to attack infectious organisms. Scientists hope that the T-cell research will lead to the development of new ways to breach the barrier with therapeutic substances.

Biotechnology research may lead to treatments for auto-immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Rheumatoid arthritis. Research indicates that cells which resemble invading cells may be attacked by T-cells by accident. Inhibiting these attacks is the focus of research.

Researchers have found some antigens, know as superantigens attract T-cells in laboratory rats. These superantigens are both beneficial and harmful. They may be able to destroy certain types of cancer, but they also may create autoimmune diseases.
