The world is a midwdife in China's rebirth
Article Abstract:
The international community's eagerness to do business with China has greatly improved its economy and the plight of its citizens. China rose from the 34th to the 10th in world trade in 1994 while the nonstate sector now accounts for about 55% of GDP. Incomes have increased by about 9% annually, resulting in over 170 million citizens rising out of poverty. Infant mortality has dropped to 35 per thousand in 1994 while life expectancy increased to 69 years.

Economist expects China to make soft landing
Article Abstract:
China's State Statistical Bureau economist Ye Zhen predicts an improvement in economic growth and inflation in 1996. Ye reports that gross domestic product in Jan.-Sep. 1996, has risen 9.6% to $548.16 billion from 1995 levels. Ye also stresses that retail and consumer prices rose by 6.6% and 8.8%, respectively. China's grain harvest is also expected to increase by 15 million metric tons to 480 million metric tons.

East Asia must work to maintain its miracle
Article Abstract:
Proclamations regarding East Asia's economic miracle are largely misleading. Although the gains achieved by nations such as Malaysia and Indonesia are undoubtedly impressive, the fact remains that most East Asian countries are still in the beginning of the development process. The countries in the region should realize that economic growth cannot be taken for granted.
