They only look dead
Article Abstract:
The Republican Party performed poorly in elections in California in Nov 1998, with losses including the governorship and five assembly seats. Demographic factors such as immigration from Asia and Latin America are seen as part of the reason for this poor performance, but the strength of the economy and a drop in crime rates tended to go against them. Republicans could still improve their performance in attracting Latino votes, but they need to change their image as representing white males.

Article Abstract:
California's Republican Party has been badly hit by internal divisions and an excess of emotion since 1996, and the race to choose a candidate for the 2002 governors election may be a bitter one. Richard Riordan is the main Republican contender.
