US corporate profits have been above expectations for 1999, and thise has led to an upward revision for the S and P 500 from Abby Joseph Cohen. There is a debate as to the meaning for profit figures, since they will be presented in such a way that appeals to stockholders. There is a gray area where attention may be focused on favorable figures, and less favorable data may be hard to find, and this is a different issue from accounting fraud. Corporate bosses have tended to oppose move to increase the transparency of corporate accounting.

The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) is proposing regulations that would require banks to use market value accounting (MVA) to measure the worth of their assets and liabilities. The Securities and Exchange Commission strongly endorses MVA, but the Federal Reserve Board opposes it.
