Czech Republic: Beer consumption per inhabitant was about 160 lt per year on average during the past 10 years. The consumption places the Czech Republic onto the first position in the world. In 1999 soft drink consumption was 180 lt per inhabitant and year and overtook beer consumption for the first time, by 20 lt per inhabitant and year. The Czech Republic is in the 15th position in the world in the field of total beer production. The Czech Republic exported 1.7 mil hl of beer in 2000, only 9.5% of total production. There were only 52 breweries in the Czech Republic in 2000 compared to 71 breweries in 1991. The breweries that were closed were not able to cope with the growth of the prices of raw materials and power and lacked finances for the renovation of equipment.

CKD Blansko has a new owner
Article Abstract:
CKD Blansko (Blansko, Czech Republic), engineering firm, has a new owner. The owner is Cash & Capital (C&C), which won a tender for the firm's bankruptcy assets. C&C with Czech and Slovak capital set up new firm CKD Blansko Strojirny (Czech Republic) and provided it with the property of the purchased company worth CEK 350 mil and an investment of CEK 60 mil. The new firm should increase its outputs to about CEK 800 mil by 2003.
