This land, our land: Keating's plan on Aborigine rights angers all sides
Article Abstract:
Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating in Jun 1993 proposed a solution to conflicting land claims that pleased neither the Aborigines nor mining and pastoral interests. Keating's compromise dealt with issues raised by the High Court's 1992 Mabo decision that established the Aborigines' legal title to lands taken over by European settlers. Large tracts in Western Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory, used mostly by mining and pastoral concerns, thus became subject to dispute. Keating suggested that the Aborigines receive the land only after exempt leases expire.

Unfortunately, the Greens were not impressed.Since Green issues remain important in Australia, Keating must be able to fix his damaged relationship with them.

All mates together: Keating drafts rightwing allies into the cabinet
Article Abstract:
Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating has made several changes in his cabinet. These changes, in which Keating has brought allies from the right wing faction of his Labor Party, suggest that Keating's government is becoming more conservative. This development may anger the Labor party's left wing. Graham Richardson has become health minister, Laurie Brereton has been put in charge of industrial relations and Alan Griffiths has become industry minister.
