Round and round
Article Abstract:
Japan failed to achieve anything significant in the current General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) Uruguay talks. The delay in making a new international trade pact is advantageous for Japan, who prefers the status quo for its protected rice market. However, the absence of a standard trade agreement could trigger massive requests for special trade accommodations, oftentimes conflicting, from various nations Japan deals with. This could put Japan in a very uncompromising position. The US, meanwhile, would like to see a new GATT before the summit of the Group of Seven convenes on Jul 6-8, 1992.

Sweet taste of success: price drop bolsters orange-juice sales in Japan
Article Abstract:
Elimination of import quotas on orange-juice concentrate in Japan in Apr 1992 caused the price of orange juice to fall from 300 yen per liter to 170-200 yen per liter by Apr 1993. Japanese food marketers such as the supermarket chain Daiei hope that the price drop will help persuade Japanese consumers to buy more orange juice. However, this may prove difficult since orange juice is not part of the traditional diet and the Japanese tend to be conservative in such matters. Western agricultural exporters hope that the experience with orange juice will lead the Japanese to end more quotas.

Gearing up for a fight
Article Abstract:
US and European car manufacturers take issue with a master plan submitted late in 1992 by Mitsubishi to the Vietnamese government. The plan suggested that only Japanese firms be allowed to sell cars in Vietnam, and postponed local manufacture of parts until the year 2000. As with China, it calls for the sale of used cars imported from Japan. Most experts predict that by the end of the 1990s, annual vehicle sales in Vietnam will rise from 10,000 to 60,000.
