Thousands lose jobs in Ostankino Russian TV shake up

Ten thousand employees of the Ostankino Russian state-owned television channel have been sacked prior to the privatization of Ostankino's Channel 1 station, which on April 1 1995 will be renamed Russian Public Television (RPT). The Chairman of Ostankino, the liberal reformist Alexander Yakovlev, has resigned, although Yakovlev will stay Chairman of the Federal Television and Radio Service. RPT has signed new contracts with the staff it wishes to retain. Yakovlev has condemned Ostankino employees for refusing to support his reform measures.

Italy's Telepiu unveils extension to digital TV service
Article Abstract:
The Telepiu Group of Italy is to extend its digital satellite TV service with new programmes and services. It will launch an Italian version of The Weather Channel, to join its eight satellite channels, and two new audio channels will be introduced. A further sports channel will be added in March and it will present the country's first independent movie channel in April, offering subscribers the choice of films during prime time viewing.

Finland details tender for second commercial TV station
Article Abstract:
The Finnish government is to award the licence for its second commercial television station at the end of 1996, with broadcasting expected to commence in spring 1997. The five year analog concession has been extended and it is stipulated that 50% of its programming must be produced in Europe. Of programs sourced from Finnish producers, 50% must be taken from small and medium-sized independents.
