Japanese, European firms battle Qualcomm over cellular standard
Article Abstract:
Qualcomm is threatening to mount a technological warfare against Japan if Japanese and European cellular equipment manufacturers fail to negotiate with the firm. Qualcomm's digital cellular standard, which is called code division multiple access (CDMA), is being used by companies such as Lucent Technologies and Motorola. DoCoMo's development of Wideband-CDMA has been perceived by Qualcomm as a major assault to its CDMA. In turn, Qualcomm is also developing its own 3G technology called CDMA2000.

Call for speedy compromise: cellular companies reply to wireless rivals
Article Abstract:
Leading cellular telephone operators in Asia and Europe are sending a joint statement to rivals, L.M. Ericsson Telefon AB and Qualcomm Inc. The equipment manufacturers are squabbling over the manufacture of the third-generation product called 3G. They plan to create a global standard that will alleviate increasingly crowded digital cellular networks. The content of the joint statement has not been announced but observers predict that it would contain a potent admonition to the rivals.
