Tillers' troubles: farmers want a better deal from government
Article Abstract:
Thailand's farmers are uniting to press for solutions to their problems, and politicians and bureaucrats seem nervous over potential conflict. Bamrung Khayotha, head of the 50,000-member Isan Small Farmer's Congress, has become the movement's unofficial leader, though he says he may be killed soon, as were many of his colleagues. He and other organization leaders will gather in Nov 1995 to seek a resolution over excessive farmer debts to state-run banks, land-ownership problems, and disputes with local power figures.
