Fight for the city: Chamlong wants to govern Bangkok, again
Article Abstract:
Former Bangkok governor Chamlong Srimuang hopes to recapture the city for his Palang Dharma Party in upcoming elections to maintain a critical base of support. The incumbent governor, elected via Palang Dharma, switched to the rival Prachakorn Thai Party. Chamlong has a reputation as an devout, ascetic Buddhist who as mayor helped clean up the city's politics. He has handed leadership of Palang Dharma to Thaksin Shinawatra, who made it more appealing to the city's economic elite, but the rank-and-file are restive.

How much farther?: Burma's efforts to boost tourism hit bottlenecks
Article Abstract:
Tourism has rapidly become a vital source of foreign exchange to Burma, but efforts to boost it further are stumbling over problems with infrastructure and transportation. The number of visitors rose to 100,000 in the year ending Mar 31, 1995, from 26,000 in 1993. The government wants 500,000 in 1996, though officials admit that is impossible. Only 6000 hotel rooms are now available, though dozens of new hotels are under construction. Air links are improving but still limited, and other transport is unreliable.

Motion sickness; little relief in sight for Bangkok's traffic ailments
Article Abstract:
Bangkok's traffic woes have improved little in six months of work by Deputy Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, though maintaining the status quo was no mean feat. He pays money from his own pocket to police who improve traffic flow, persuaded bankers to change their hours to ease the morning rush, initiated a public-relations drive to encourage following the rules of the road, and put up much-criticized humorous signs. A sophisticated traffic- control system wil soon be in place. However, more cars keep coming.
