Timber: design for durability
Article Abstract:
Timber is vulnerable to decay when used as a building material and designers should ensure they provide the best environment for preventing damage. The major causes of decay are dampness, insects and ultra-violet radiation. Dampness can be prevented by providing adequate ventilation, protection from direct and indirect wetting, a barrier or space between the timber and damp materials and by preventing interstitial condensation. Other factors to consider are the need for preservative chemicals, moisture control, species of timber and surface finishes.

Bristol cream
Article Abstract:
Architectural firm Feilden Clegg has been able to use brickwork imaginatively in its design for Bengough's House nursing and residential home in Bristol, England. The brickwork uses standard stretcher bond for six courses, then a course of headers. The stretchers are 50 mm deep paving bricks, and this creates an interesting wall texture. The overall character of the development is relaxing and deliberately rambling, and there is no sense of institutionalization.
