Time for Hong Kong conciliation: Britain and China should end confrontation in 1995
Article Abstract:
Britain and China must both make cooperative efforts in 1995 to avoid disastrous disruptions in Hong Kong when the transition in rule occurs. The two countries have been largely at odds since Governor Chris Patten angered China in 1993 with his election reform proposals. That could be resolved by China agreeing to recognize the remaining 41 legislators not affected by his legislation. China must also realize that despite its suspicions, Britain can do little after it gives up control of the colony on June 30, 1997.

British look beyond Hong Kong: they seek closer ties with East Asia, particularly China
Article Abstract:
Britain's political leaders have shifted their attention in East Asia from Hong Kong to China, and now consider the former simply a complicating factor in dealing with the latter. The most recent House of Commons debate on the topic, on Apr 27, 1995, clearly showed that China's growth and Britain's relative lack of involvement are the major issues of concern. Hong Kong arose chiefly in the context of how British actions there were antagonizing Beijing.

China's hard line on Hong Kong: even traditional supporters have become critical of Beijing
Article Abstract:
Criticism of China's actions regarding Hong Kong now comes even from such ardent China supporters as Liu Yiu Chu, indicating the extent of the mainland's overreaching. Liu, a lawyer and member of the National People's Congress, has in the past stridently attacked British maneuvers she considered over the line. When she and others in the pro-China camp criticize Beijing, it should warn the mainland to pull back and reconsider its course.
