Tobacco companies in Eastern Europe find charity pays
Article Abstract:
The tobacco industry in Eastern Europe has developed the image of being supportive of charities, even as it is perceived as a public health threat in the US and in many countries in Western Europe. Providing finances for charitable causes has helped tobacco companies transform their marketing and public relations. They started overhauling these areas during the fall of communism in 1989. Simultaneously, the tobacco industry was praised for supporting community ventures during the difficult move to a market economy. Companies offered jobs, investment, huge tax revenues, and additional contributions.
