Fractured factions: the end of the LDP
Article Abstract:
Changes in Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership could hurt the nation's economy. The recent illness of Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi coupled with former PM Noboru Takeshita's withdrawal from the political arena has left the LDP with a weak leadership. The party is trying to postpone elections but will probably hold them in June. Possible new leaders and their strategies are discussed.

Japan needs to refocus its national vision
Article Abstract:
Corruption at Japan's Ministry of Finance and Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) has grown in recent years. Corruption is not actually new to Japanese politics but its rise in these two elite agencies has major implications. The Ministry of Finance and MITI were both in the forefront of postwar Japan's efforts to develop its economy. Bureaucrats in these two ministries largely resisted the temptation to abuse their powers for the sake of higher national goals. This sense of mission has dissipated, especially in the late 1980s when many believed this goal to have been achieved. Japan's bureaucrats must once again be given a sense of higher purpose if they are to focus on the country's needs rather than personal gain.

Tokyo outlines another stimulus plan for its economy
Article Abstract:
Japanese economists, investors and markets doubt that the economic package proposal of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party will have much effect on Japan's economic problems. The package promises tax cuts and between 10 trillion yen to 18 trillion yen in new spending. Economists believe that only a more fundamental structural reform of the economy can ensure the effectivity of the proposed package.
