Too late, perhaps
Article Abstract:
The Greek-Cypriot government has decided against deploying Russian anti-aircraft missiles in Cyprus. Greek Cypriots support the deployment of missiles in Cyprus, and the Greek-Cypriot president, Glafkos Clerides, has been criticised for backing down. Turkey had opposed the deployment of the missiles, and Greece wants the Greek Cypriots to join the European Union. There is no clear cut gain for the Greek Cypriots in terms of membership of the European Union unless Turkey is prepared to accept a compromise on the status of the Turkish part of Cyprus, and Turkey appears unable to do so.
