Article Abstract:
The tourist travel market in Italy has reported a 9.9% increase in per capita domestic travel expenditure due to the rising subscription of hotel service and food service from 1993 to 1997. The trend is similar in Spain and Japan, which reported increase in per capita spending respectively by 53.5% and 10.6%. Meanwhile, in other countries, in the US, UK and France, per capita expenditure in each domestic tourism sectors have declined respectively by 5.1%, 23.5% and 4.4% from 1993 to 1997. The trend is attributed to the rising popularity of outdoor activities, camping and caravan travel in the US, UK and France.

France saw relatively high figures in expenditure by outbound tourists compared to incoming spending. The high result is partly attributed to French spending on average eight nights in foreign accommodation, whereas visitors to France average just five nights. restrained by the high cost of travel to other countries, outgoing tourism markets in Japan and Italy saw respective drops of 6.1% and 1.4% in per capita spending. Germany also posted a decline of 16% in per capita spending in th market for outgoing tourism, despite the strong volume rise of 39.9% over the 1993 to 1997 review period.

France experienced lower growth rate of 8.6% in spending per visitor in the incoming market of its travel and tourism industry compared to other countries included in the review. Italy reported a 1.7% decrease in growth, while Canada registered an increase of 38.1% in incoming per capita expenditure from 1993 to 1997. The growth is attributed to a decline in currency value over the review period that positively affected foreign tourist spending.
