Spain's family sector of the breakfast cereal market has posted the strongest volume increase of 48.3% in the 1993 to 1997 review period. The sector was the main recipient of product innovation and promotion in the period, while demand stemmed from health and diet products which account or about 56% in 1997. The children's sector recorded an overall volume increase of 10% from 1993 to 1997 due to product innovation in the shape of chocolate covered cereals and substantial advertising in the first half of the period.

Spain's children's cereal sector of the breakfast cereal market was dominated by sugar-coated cereals with a 48.9% share in volume terms in 1997. Sugar-coated and chocolate-coated products are in a close fight in the sector, with the latter seeing a rise in volume share of 1.6 percentage points to represent 45.9% in 1997. Cereal producers grew their product lines by adding chocolate to their range and supported the launches with advertising campaigns.
