Spain's breakfast cereal market was headed by the children's sector with sales of 14,676 tonnes to represent 50.1% in volume share in 1997. The demand within the dominating sector is a key factor in the development of the domestic breakfast cereals market. This is attributed to a more successful initial response from a young consumer base to heavy advertising which supported roll outs of new products. The promotion of cereals as a healthy breakfast alternative also prompted parent to buy them for their children. However, the sector posted a decline in market share a the industry started to target other consumer groups.

Spain's breakfast cereal market was dominated by children's sector in terms of value with a share of 51% in 1997. The value share of the sector declines steadily from 1995 to 1997 as volume demand drops. A greater alignment of price and volume was observed in comparison to past years as value continue to run slightly ahead of that of volume at 0.9 percentage points in 1997. The family cereal sector posted a value share increase of 5.3 percentage points from 1995 to 1997, attributed to strong demand for niche products with high fiber or low calorific content.

Spain's market for breakfast cereals reported an overall growth of 26.3% in 1997 to 29,299 metric tons as nominal value terms rose 1.5% in the 1993-1997 review period. Market values reached Ptas20,989.7 million in the latter year, as the market posted a drop of 12.7% in the period. The increased acceptance by consumers of cereals was prompted by substantial advertising and promotional activity, but still failed to replace traditional breakfast foods.
