Toughing it out
Article Abstract:
The level of unemployment in South Korea is offocially 6.2% but there are many people who are not registered since they have despaired of finding work, and a number of families have become destitute. The government promised to improve the safety net to protect those who lost jobs as a result of restructuring, but the conglomerates still need further restructuring, and inequality is worsening. There have been protests over contribution levels to a new pension scheme, which have led to some changes. Discontent has become a worry for the government.
