Town planning education-as it was then
Article Abstract:
UK town planning began formally in 1909, with the Housing and Town Planning Act. In the same year town planning education began at Liverpool University. The first students on the course studied such topics as law, architecture, design and engineering, all related specifically to towns and their development. Many of the first students were local people working in related disciplines and studying part-time. It then became a graduate profession, and included other areas of knowledge such as geography and economics.

Junior jobs, planning graduates and student recruitment
Article Abstract:
Recruitment and student numbers in the planning profession are being affected by the recession. This tends to go in cycles, with lack of jobs affecting the numbers of students recruited to planning courses. It takes time for the effects to filter through, and can mean that the recession is over and jobs plentiful at a time of low student numbers. In the present recession there are few jobs available to planners leaving college, while student numbers are increasing.
