Trade for trees: tariff reform will help save the forests
Article Abstract:
Removal of unfair tariff policies in developed countries could help solve the problem of rainforest protection in the developing countries. Japan imposes a 15% tariff on plywood imports since it protects its own plywood workers. If this tariff were removed, exporting countries will be able to put more value on their wood and fewer trees would be felled. Also, more money can be used to protect forests. Forest conservation is tied up with both economic and ecological concerns and industrialized countries must realize the extent to which they contribute to the problem.

Christmas gamble: island casino hopes to attract Asia's big rollers
Article Abstract:
Christmas Island, an Australian possession in the Indian Ocean 360 miles south of Java, Indonesia, will be the site of a new casino that will open on Aug 8, 1993. Christmas Island Resort, the company that is managing the project, hopes that the $34 million casino will attract mostly high-stakes Asian gamblers. Though located on Australian territory, ethnic-Chinese Indonesians own most of the casino. The island's proximity to Indonesia raised some controversy since Indonesian Muslims object to gambling.
