Traveller's tales
Article Abstract:
An economic and political analyst says that the recent 1993 debate by Hong Kong's Legislative Council (Legco) on free trade turned out fairly well. The debate itself is a significant reminder of Hong Kong's transition in 1997. The debate was started by a motion made by Fred Li asking for a free trade council that would be tasked in safeguarding competition, protecting consumers and preventing monopolies. This motion was not well accepted by some representatives, however, since they did not see a need for another new council. A constitutional amendment dealing with fairness was just what is needed according to the opposers.

Traveller's tales
Article Abstract:
The withdrawal of the American Marines from the Philippines in Nov 1992, has left the Filipinos feeling lost. Philippines was the largest US foreign base, and most Filipinos loved the Americans. The American presence in the Philippines was unaffected by political turmoils around. In fact, apart from the politicians and the elite, a great bond had developed between the ordinary Filipinos and the Americans. There were also many highly skilled American workers in the Philippines, and the cities now look deserted without the American Marines.

Air heads: the underside of Asia's air service
Article Abstract:
A traveller, who used Garuda Airlines, recalls the bad service that the passengers received from the ground staff and stresses that an airlines' reputation depends on off-flight service as much as it does on in-flight service. The airlines did not properly communicate the details of a delayed flight and no staff made any effort to ensure the comfort of a sick passenger. While in-flight service was very good, the experience while waiting in the airport left a bad impression.
