Pres Clinton's economic advisors seem prepared to demand equal status under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The US has historically had more open markets than most nations, and any steps toward protectionism will hurt the international economy in the long term.

Did Britain's diplomats blunder?
Article Abstract:
Huang Wenfang, a Chinese Communist official, claims that China had no intention of pushing the issue of Hong Kong control, until British diplomats brought up the issue in 1979. Huang's statements have caused some critics to blame UK diplomats for 'losing' Hong Kong.

Yeltsin's diplomats

Boris Yeltsin's foreign ministry staff is not as experienced in international diplomacy as the staff under Mikhail Gorbachev. The three major members seem to be in a power struggle amongst themselves. They are Andrei Kozyrev, Vladimir Lukin, and Yuli Vorontsov.
