With European Union Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy preparing to step down from his post and U.S. Trade Commissioner Robert Zoellick possibly leaving office if President Bush is not reelected, U.S. and European trade relations are facing the end of an era of negotiations enhanced by the successful personal and professional relationship of the two commissioners. Among other things, the two trade chiefs have worked together to ease the strained ties between Europe and the U.S. r egarding the Iraq war.

OECD review urges EU to reduce its barriers

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has called on the European Union to lower barriers to cross-border services provision, assist integration of retail banking, and improve competition in the energy sector in order to reduce its income gap compared to the US and other top performing nations. Average incomes are nearly a third lower in the European Union's 15-country bloc than in other top OECD nations.
