Translation machines: the smart new tool for multinationals
Article Abstract:
ITT Europe has turned its automatic language-translation system installed in early 1982 into a money-maker, adding translation work for other companies to the work done by its in-house translators. The system used by ITT was installed by Weidner Communications Inc., a company that has sold close to 50 such systems for translating European languages into English and English into those languages; a Japanese version of the system was recently developed by Bravice Computer International Inc. that claims to be 92 percent accurate. Human translators are required in addition to the machine translation because the Weidner system guarantees only a 65 percent accuracy rate, but the professional translators are as happy with the system's productivity increase as ITT's management is.

The cushy new world of smart buildings
Article Abstract:
So-called 'smart' buildings are being erected in countries throughout the world, with computers connected to optical cables and various sensors acting as the buildings' central nervous systems. Managers benefit from the automation of office buildings from increased employee productivity, reduced operating costs, and more comfortable work environments. Innovations in electronics and data processing have made the implementation of these smart building systems possible, and while many have been available individually for some time, integrating the systems into a unified whole is a more recent development. The operation of several of these smart buildings is described.
