Article Abstract:
Events concerning New Zealand power company Mercury Energy show that deregulation in the energy industry is not without potential problems. Mercury became responsible for the supply of electricity to Auckland in the early 1990s. It opted to delay the installation of new power lines to the city's business district. However, all the district's supply lines failed together creating a five-week power blackout. Factors which increased public outrage included revealed irregularities on Mercury's board of directors, and the fact that the company continued to negotiate the takeover of a rival.
