Transparent motives
Article Abstract:
A new rule introduced on Jun 1, 1992 has given the Korea Stock Exchange the right to ask listed companies for information regarding suspicious share price movements. The move was prompted by rumors that several listed companies engineered sharp share price rises before declaring bankruptcy. The greater stockmarket transparency will help the KSE to stem the common practices of share-ramping and insider trading. A more radical though politically difficult solution is also proposed, which is to identify the principals in stockmarket transactions.

Yen or greenback?
Article Abstract:
Asian countries have always debated on whether to peg their currencies' exchange rates to the US dollar or the Japanese yen. In a bid to forge a regional economic union, Malaysia has been pushing for the creation of a yen bloc. However, countries with strong trade ties to Japan would not benefit from tying up their currencies to the yen. Any appreciation of the yen would lessen the competitiveness of their exports, forcing them to increase output in order to sustain their earnings.

Traders' tea party
Article Abstract:
An atmosphere of optimism permeated the Davos Group's Europe/East Asia economic forum held in Hong Kong from Oct 14-16, 1992 as there was no talk of Asian fears of economic regionalism and trade fortresses. There was, however, talk of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation welcoming members of the North American Free Trade Agreement and vice versa, the European Community advocating free trade and Gatt's Uruguay Round being completed successfully.
