Traps of the free market
Article Abstract:
British firms are increasingly being acquired by foreign firms. Some analysts express concern about this situation but others say that objectors are behind the times and that UK companies have performed well under foreign ownership. However, the situation is potentially dangerous. Some examples of foreign ownership could threaten national security. Foreign owners also have less interest in British national concerns and they may even be antagonistic. Foreign owners facing a choice about whether to close a factory in their own country or in the UK are likely to select the UK option.

Trading places
Article Abstract:
Business relocation can cause a multitude of problems, including losing customers, staff and suppliers, however, it can also be an opportunity to reassess organisational issues such as home working and the uses that can be made of new technology. New technology may even mean that relocation is unnecessary because staff can work together even when they are in different places. Factors to consider include the cost, getting staff, finding the right location, nearby competitors, and what help is available. Personal issues such as the quality of life and schooling are also important.

Relocation: moving with the times
Article Abstract:
Relocation is complex and sophisticated computer programmes can guide companies through the financial and legal implications. The main considerations when deciding on a destination are access to markets, good transport networks, and the quality of the local workforce. A survey undertaken by Blackhorse Relocation found that Bristol is the top choice for relocation, followed by Edinburgh and then Nottingham. Popular destinations for companies moving out of London are to the west and north west borders of the capital.
