Trash overboard
Article Abstract:
Fines have been imposed on two cruise lines for polluting Alaskan waters, and there are mixed feelings in Alaska about the increasing popularity of Alaska as a tourist destination. Poll taxes have been proposed for the capital, Juneau, and for smaller towns, to help pay for expenses associated with tourism, and many Alaskans hope that this could also deter some tourists. There are also economic benefits from tourism, especially since fishing and hunting have weakened as economic activities.

Death in the afternoon
Article Abstract:
Florida Keys was a quiet place for a holiday, but has become a tourist resort and there is concern about the environmental impact of the industry. There are power failures and the sewer system is collapsing. Faecal bacteria has contaminated the beach, and real estate taxes have risen. Staff cannot easily be found cheap housing. Critics argue that there should be no need to advertise Florida Keys as a tourist resort, but tourism is a major employer and the advertising continues.
