Traveller's tales
Article Abstract:
The McDonald's restaurant in Peking stands opposite Zhongnanhai in Tiananmen Square. While the Chinese equivalent of Moscow's Kremlin proclaims Mao Zedong's maxim 'Serve the People,' McDonald's proudly asserts 'Billions served.' With more people posing for photographs in front of McDonald's than in front of Zhongnanhai, it seems that the US-based fastfood chain has more fans in communist China than does the bastion of communist poweracross the square. It is probably for this reason that the Beijing Weekend, theChina Daily and the Peking Evening News all decided to criticize McDonald's.

Traveller's tales
Article Abstract:
Ulan Bator citizens are adjusting to life after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Bread and food supplies are perennially scarce, petty crime is increasing, transportation has slowed down or grounded to a halt and power cuts are common. But the Mar 8, 1992 celebration of International Women's Day was an excuse to eat cake instead of staple bread, and to have extra rations of vodka. A local gentlemen's pageant featured a test of table manners with formal dining settings but no food. The Ulan Bator Hotel, the country's premier hotel, remains very substandard.

Experiences on a trip from Ulan Bator to Karakorum in post-Soviet Mongolia are presented. The week-long trek is made memorable by Baboorshkin, the taxi driver, who overcomes the frequent breakdowns of his Volga-mobile through ingenious means and who uses these breaks to talk about the landscape.
