Television sets accounted for 855 million pounds of total retail value, with video cassette recorder sales totalling 550 million pounds, neither includes rental figures. Watching television continues to be the most popular pastime, with television set ownership currently standing at 98%. Radio listening also ranks highly, although it has dropped by 16% since 1983. Increases since 1983 include the number of people watching video recordings of TV programmes and also of pre-recorded videos, which are bought or hired. Recent trends in audio-visual and leisure activities are detailed.

The amount of leisure time available has risen significantly over the last 30 years, as a result of greater paid holidays, and also a shorter week. Women aged between 35-44 are among those with the smallest amount of leisure time, along with women in work and those with children aged between 0-15. The over 55 age group has the most leisure time.
