The UK market for irons reached 79 million pounds sterling in 1993, up 12% from 71 million pounds sterling in 1992. Volume sales for 1993 totalled 3.6 million units, against 3.4 million units previously. The market is dominated by the shot-of-steam sector, representing a 42.3% volume share and a 53.2% value share. Imports of irons in 1992 rose by 22% in value and 32% in volume. Singapore imports accounted for nearly 30% of volume sales in 1992. Iron sales in the UK are led by Morphy Richards with a 23% volume share, followed by Philips and Rowenta. The iron market is set to reach 3.8 million units in 1994, rising to 4.10 million units by 1998.

The steam iron sector rose in value from 68.3 million pounds sterling in 1993 to 88.3 million pounds sterling in 1997. The dry iron sector fell from 5.3 million pounds sterling in 1993 to 4.8 million pounds sterling in 1997. The total iron market is expected to reach 108.3 million pounds sterling by the year 2002.
