Trois filiales de la SNCB dans Inter Ferry Boats
Article Abstract:
The SNCB, the Belgian railroad company, has consolidated its Edmond Depaire railroad division and its Ferry Boats and Interferry subsidiaries into the Inter Ferry Boats (IFB) public limited company, headed by Etienne Schouppe, the SNCB's managing director. This company, which is active in rail-sea combined transport, will make a 1998 turnover of BFr 2.3bn and will handle more than 500,000 containers. Its objective is to offer a value-added service from a single booking office and to develop special operations such as inter-port shuttles, railbarges, and shipping lines products. The IFB will continue its collaboration with operators Intercontainer/Interfrigo, the CNC, Combi24, Transfacht International, Novatrans, and EWS.

Le r seau t l com de la SNCB : courtis et prometteur
Article Abstract:
In Belgium, the SNCB intends to draw substantial revenues by renting out its optical fibre communications network. A 10-year rental contract has been signed with Mobistar, concerning the use and sub-rental of optical fibre rings. This contract is to initially bring in between BFr 25mn and BFr 75mn per year for the SNCB. Other rental contracts are to be signed with other partners; many operators appear to be interested in the SNCB's optical fibre network. The SNCB is currently investing around BFr 6bn in order to complete its telecommunications network, which is to be 2,000 kilometres long in 1999.

STIB: 583.000 voyageurs par jour sur le r seau
Article Abstract:
In 1997, STIB (the Soci t des Transports Intercomunaux de Bruxelles) transported 212.7mn passengers in its metros, its trams and its buses. This figure is double that of 15 years ago, but it is down by 300,000 passengers compared with 1996. This decrease is due to the drop in use of trams and buses due to the lack of own rights of way, which obliges the vehicles to mix with the rest of the traffic, where they may be caught in traffic jams. The use of the metro, which is faster and more regular is growing.
