Article Abstract:

Czech Republic: Company insolvency increased by 3.7% in 1998 compared to 1997. The overdue debts of 1,567 companies were 53.7 bil Kc higher than their overdue receivables in 1998. Companies had total overdue payables of 145.6 bil Kc and overdue receivables of 206 bil Kc in 1998. The number of active large non-financial companies with more than 100 employees decreased by 2.7% to 4,679 in 1998. Their added value increased by 9.4% to 654 bil Kc in 1998. The number of profitable companies increased by 7.2% to 3,122 in 1998. The number of unprofitable companies decreased by 17.7% to 1,567 in 1998. All the 4,679 companies saw a total pre-tax economic result of 73.6 bil Kc in 1998, 29.7% more compared to 1997.

Article Abstract:

A study into the enlargement of the European Union (EU) has concluded the integration of Eastern and Central European countries into the EU will be beneficial. It will give western businesses access to new emerging markets whilst helping the East European countries develop a democratic system of government. Some observers suggest it is impossible to predict the outcome of enlargement but it will bring greater competition in the marketplace. Ten countries are waiting for membership. They must be prepared to demonstrate how their participation in the EU will be of benefit to all the members.

Eastern Pacific troubles

Article Abstract:

The US is faced with the task of nation rebuilding as a result of the 1992 Los Angeles, CA, riots. Of primary concern is the re-evaluation of the public policy, which has spawned a society increasingly characterized by welfare dependency. Such a move would not only address social problems concerning blacks, but those of other minority groups as well. Government must also pursue efforts to renew immigrant confidence in both the nation and system, since the US benefits from the infusion of talented and skilled immigrants.
