The Revolutionary United Front in Sierra Leone is becoming more powerful. It has captured British residents as hostages and staged attacks on the government. The army under Valentine Strasser is weakening because officers are either corrupt, deserting or joining the rebels.

The peace agreement between the government of Sierra Leone and rebels seems to be falling apart, as violence has sprouted up throughout the country. As a result, implementation of the peace accord has been suspended.
