Running to stay in front
Article Abstract:
ASEAN is considering accelerating or broadening its trade group Asean Free Trade Area's (AFTA) liberalization in an effort to keep the larger Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum from seizing the mantle of free trade. If APEC approves the changes recommended by its Eminent Persons Group, such as upgrading by 50% commitments made under GATT, that could render AFTA and thus ASEAN less meaningful, affecting non-trade initiatives as well. However, competing interests within ASEAN will probably force AFTA to broaden rather than accelerate its liberalization.

The business of America
Article Abstract:
US support for sanctions against Myanmar for the detention of National League for Democratic leaders by the State Law and Order Restoration Council military junta has been increasing. Some multinationals pay little attention to the political conditions in the country, and others emphasize that continued economic involvement in Myanmar may help improve the its political climate in the long run. The potential influence of US business is ultimately limited because US firms only invested $16.5 in Burma in the year ending March 1995.
