Tuning up to start up
Article Abstract:
Thailand is establishing a local bond market in an attempt to attract stable, long-term investment. The country has established a rating agency, and its currency is stable, making prospects for investment good. Private companies need the market to raise long-term capital in a time of slow earnings, and state run enterprises will eventually be required to raise capital through the bond market, thus making government more efficient. Buying has generally been slow while regulatory details are completed, but it is expected to increase.

Watchdog in the kennel
Article Abstract:
Thailand's five-month-old Securities and Exchange Commission is facing many challenges to its authority and its response to them will determine whether it will be taken seriously in the future. Most important of these is the Bank of Thailand's handing over of evidence of fraud and manipulation by a few well-known market players. The commission refused to become involved in cases of brokers abusing margin accounts but it must take more steps against individual players who flaunt the rules.
