Fighting words
Article Abstract:
The Khmer Rouge of Cambodia has hardened its position vis-a-vis the central government in Phnom Penh, China and the UN. The group led by its president Khieu Samphan has initiated a strategy of economic disruption in the country and defied Chinese appeals for moderation. China, once its defender, no longer backs up the hardline Communist group. Neighbors such as Vietnam, which has a sizeable minority in the Cambodia, lie on the path of threatened violence from the group. The UN's calls for disarmament have largely been ignored.

Unravelling revolution
Article Abstract:
A split in the leadership of the Khmer Rouge may ultimately lead to its collapse. In early August, Ieng Sary defected from the Khmer Rouge along with about half the guerilla fighting force. Ieng Sary hopes to control Northwest Cambodia, where gems and timber generate money for Khmer Rouge activities. In addition, the Khmer Rouge no longer has either international support or popular support. However, in the short run the schism could lead to violence and destabilize Cambodia's fragile coalition government.

We are the world
Article Abstract:
The Khmer Rouge has made overtures to the U.S. Mak Ben, a Khmer Rouge spokesperson, met with a reporter. He asserted that the U.S. was plotting with other Western countries and Vietnam to eliminate Cambodia in order to reduce Chinese influence in the area. He appealed to the U.S. to give up the plan and make alliance with the Khmer Rouge to stabilize Cambodia. He also portrayed the Khmer Rouge as patriotic nationalists and thus worthy of the sympathy and help of a democratic country.
