Land of contradictions: Myanmar's leaders view their country very differently than outsiders
Article Abstract:
Conversations with the top military brass of the Myanmar Republic show the glaring inconsistencies between how these leaders perceive their country an how the outside world views it. Brig-Gen Maung Maung believes that Myanmar is generally in good shape despite acknowledging some difficulties. A document points out the intelligent, relatively educated and hardworking labor force which is contradictory to what the US embassy reports as a deterioration of public education. In reality, Myanmar's kyat has collapsed and foreign investment has declined due to the Asian crisis.

Myanmar's Golden Rock presents a striking view, air of good fortune
Article Abstract:
Thousands of Buddhist pilgrims and ethnic Chinese of various religious orientations are flocking to Golden Rock located in Mon State, Yangon, Myanmar. The special appeal of Golden rock is the financial good fortune that befalls its visitors. It is associated with a legend involving buddha's single strand of hair that a stupa atop the boulder enshrines. Golden Rock was previously off-limits to pilgrims due to ethnic rebel occupation. However, since the government assumed control in the 1990s, it has been opened to the public.
